Outstanding Dedication Recognised at EdConnect Australia Awards
Two remarkable members of the EdConnect Australia community have been honoured at the 2025 EdConnect Alcoa Foundation Peel Awards, held at Government House on March 11, with the Governor of Western Australia, His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM, in attendance.
Marlize Pretorius, from Port Kennedy Primary School, received the Peel School Coordinator of the Year Award for her unwavering support of EdConnect volunteers. Marlize goes above and beyond to create a welcoming, inclusive environment, thoughtfully matching volunteers with students and ensuring they feel connected, valued, and appreciated. Known for her kindness and reliability, Marlize’s efforts have made a lasting impact on both volunteers and students. “Her dedication has resulted in many students receiving the support they need,” said EdConnect Area Manager Karen Barden.
John Bryson, an EdConnect mentor since 2018, was awarded Peel Volunteer of the Year for his passionate commitment to students at Warnbro Community High School and Port Kennedy Primary. Using chess as a powerful mentoring tool, John helps students build confidence, friendships, and critical thinking skills. Described as “timely, organised, and always thinking ahead,” John’s proactive approach and willingness to support multiple schools exemplifies the spirit of EdConnect.
Rebecca Miniken, Alcoa of Australia’s Stakeholder Engagement and Social Investment Manager, praised both recipients, saying: “Marlize and John’s dedication is inspirational. Their work shows the incredible difference one person can make in a school community.”
EdConnect Australia congratulates Marlize and John on their well-deserved recognition and thanks them for their invaluable contributions to helping young people thrive.
