From just $100,
help someone just like Alex
We would like to introduce you to Alex Weedon (19), a former Shenton College student and mentored by EdConnect volunteer Bianca. Bianca worked with Alex to complete years 10 – 12 to achieve competency in standard English as well as socio-emotional support leading up to his graduation in 2022. While Alex grew up he attended an International Baccalaureate (IB) school in West Africa, and after returning to Australia in year 7 he later struggled with a smooth transition to mainstream Australian school. His discontent caused him to tune out in the classroom and eventually he became classified as at educational risk.
As we know, schools are straining to maintain standards expected of them and are under constant pressure from competing forces. Grattan Institute analysis of 2022 NAPLAN data shows that once children fall behind, they often struggle to catch up, irrespective of their level of advantage.
Behind the scenes, our EdConnect volunteers are stepping up to support learning and development outcomes, giving their time through our school-based program to students who are identified as needing that extra support most.
Luckily, Alex had a strong network around him. After discussing the severity of his struggles with his parents, they approached the Learning Support team at Shenton College, who sat with Alex and discussed his options. Given his unwillingness to participate in class, coupled with his struggles in written English, the team concluded the EdConnect program may be a good resolution for Alex. He remembers vividly, the team saying “I have a perfect person for you to meet”. And so, student Alex and volunteer Bianca met and began their three-year working bond. Alex is now studying Mechatronics Engineering at UWA University, which would not have been possible without the assistance of volunteer Bianca.
Just like Bianca, our other volunteers supplement formal learning and development and provide support to students needing a little extra time on core subjects. Their impact on students can be simply phenomenal. The commitment of volunteers to the EdConnect program reflects the regard in which education and educational institutions are held in the Australian community – and the value of a good education as a primary building block in a young person’s life.
By supporting the EdConnect program, you will help to recruit and place 100 new volunteers in May and June. This will impact a massive 1,500 students across 20 schools. It all starts with just $100….
