Inspiring EdConnect volunteer assists students in social skill mentoring

Meet Gregory, one of our inspiring 1,100 volunteers here at EdConnect Australia. Greg comes with extensive experience in psychology, social work, and mentoring in a sales setting.

His personal mission of giving back to the youth resonates with our very vision of every community helping young people to succeed. And that’s exactly what inspired Gregory to join EdConnect too.

“There is a lot of diversity in NSW schools. Bringing out the best in each kid motivates them to take ownership of their best qualities and model their good character to their classmates,” said Greg echoing the sentiment of EdConnect Australia.

Gregory provides mentoring support for prosocial behaviour and social skill mentoring to some of the most vulnerable students from years 7-12 at Casuarina school.

“I have had many great role models in my life”, shares Gregory.

He wants to pay it forward now by positively influencing the young people around him. EdConnect Australia provide a platform to skilled volunteers like Greg to connect with the young people in school who need extra help and guidance, be it mentoring or learning support.

Reminiscing about one of his best moments with the students so far, he recollects.

“I was supervising a small group of adolescents compete in a paper plane competition. I reinforced their positive qualities: plane design, throwing form, tricks etc., which in turn inspired them to collaborate and problem-solve collectively as a group. It was good to see them learn such soft skills like teamwork and collaboration.”

“We are proud to have self-motivated and experienced volunteers like Gregory with us on this journey to make a positive difference in the lives of youth”, acknowledges Rhonda Velkovski, EdConnect Australia Liaison Officer.

It is only the beginning for Gregory.

“It has been a pleasure working with EdConnect to support the next generation. Their flexibility around my schedule has really helped me show up for my mentee when it matters. I look forward to continuing my mentoring with EdConnect!”

EdConnect Australia trains and supports volunteers to work in local schools, providing a safety net for young people who might otherwise struggle to realise their potential – in school and life. It is Australia’s only intergenerational volunteering charity which operates within both primary and secondary schools.
